Suddenly my MacBook Pro cannot open .zip files!

Running Monterey, and suddenly, my Macbook Pro cannot open .zip files. They seem to not be unzippable...

  • Right click on the zip file
  • Choose "Get Info

Verify the Kind says "ZIP Archive" and where it says "Open with", make sure it says "Archive Utility".

Have you tried compressing any file with a right click and choosing "Compress". Then uncompress it with a double click. You can also uncompress it with a right click and choose "Open With". Make sure it is with Archive Utility. If this works correctly, I would look more into the file you are having trouble with in case it is corrupted.
