My iPhone has Weak Security alert on WPA2 wifi connection with my Alcatel Linkzone 2 hotspot

I saw another article on this with no update since last year and I just got the same hotspot from Boost Mobile.

Basically it's the same story, I don't see where I can update the hotspot to WPA2-PSK+AES but in the specs on Alcatel's site (https://us.alcatelmobile.com/alcatel-linkzone-2/), it says it's supported:

Encryption: WPA, WPA2

Pre-Shared Key (PSK)

+ Encryption: AES, TKIP, Auto

It's a brand new Alcatel Linkzone 2 hotspot (with service from Boost Mobile). When I log into the hotspot settings at http://192.168.0.1, the security mode selected is "WPA2". The other security options are "Disabled" and "WPA/WPA2".

When I connect to my iPhone 12 Pro Max (iOS 16.3.1) to the hotspot's wifi, the connection shows up as "Weak Security", apparently classifying the security mode as WPA2 (TKIP) rather than WPA2-Personal. I have "forgotten this network" and reset the Network Settings under "Settings>General>Transfer or Reset iPhone" and it still shows up as weak security when I reconnect.

Apple's support article (HT202068) says that "WPA2 Personal (AES)" is acceptable if WPA3 is not available. So why am I getting the "Weak Security" alert on a WPA2 connection?

Hello jcf118,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

We were able to find this information stating which settings should be avoided:

"Weak security settings to avoid on your router

Don't create or join networks that use older, deprecated security protocols. These are no longer secure, they reduce network reliability and performance, and they cause your device to show a security warning:

  • WPA/WPA2 mixed modes
  • WPA Personal
  • WEP, including WEP Open, WEP Shared, WEP Transitional Security Network, or Dynamic WEP (WEP with 802.1X)
  • TKIP, including any security setting with TKIP in the name

Settings that turn off security, such as None, Open, or Unsecured, are also strongly discouraged. Turning off security disables authentication and encryption and allows anyone to join your network, access its shared resources (including printers, computers, and smart devices), use your internet connection, and monitor the websites you visit and other data transmitted over your network or internet connection. This is a risk even if security is turned off temporarily or for a guest network."

More details can be found here: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points

As far as changing your settings, we would recommend reaching out to the manufacture of your router directly.

Cheers!

Ask the Support folks at the router about what their setting for WPA2 might really mean.

Does the setting mean WPA2-PSK-AES.....or.....does is mean WPA2-PSK-TKIP?

AES is lot more secure than TKIP, yet both are called WPA2.

I'm running WPA2-PSK-AES (Apple calls this WPA2 Personal on their routers) here and the iPhones and iPads are happy with that setting.
