Weak security settings to avoid on your router

Don't create or join networks that use older, deprecated security protocols. These are no longer secure, they reduce network reliability and performance, and they cause your device to show a security warning:

  • WPA/WPA2 mixed modes
  • WPA Personal
  • WEP, including WEP Open, WEP Shared, WEP Transitional Security Network, or Dynamic WEP (WEP with 802.1X)
  • TKIP, including any security setting with TKIP in the name

Settings that turn off security, such as None, Open, or Unsecured, are also strongly discouraged. Turning off security disables authentication and encryption and allows anyone to join your network, access its shared resources (including printers, computers, and smart devices), use your internet connection, and monitor the websites you visit and other data transmitted over your network or internet connection. This is a risk even if security is turned off temporarily or for a guest network.

or If you have iOS 16 / iPadOS 16 (or higher):

Go to -> Settings -> tap Wi-Fi -> tap on the hidden Password -> enter Passcode -> you will then see the Wi-Fi Password.

I get the same message, but not the way to fix it or get to my router to change the setting, from WEB to WBA3 for max security.

There are dozens of different Wi-Fi router manufacturers and each one has different ways to adjust or change the settings on their respective router. The instructions to change settings on one product are not the same for others.

If your Wi-Fi router was provided to your by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), you need to contact the customer support people at the ISP and ask them if it is possible to change the settings on your Wi-Fi router. Unless the Wi-Fi router is fairly new, it may not even have the ability to provide the highest WPA3 security settings.

If you purchased your Wi-Fi router online or from a store, then you need to look at the labels on the back or bottom of the product to see who the manufacturer might be, so you can contact the customer support people at the manufacture to ask them about your Wi-Fi router.

Your Internet Service Provider is extremely unlikely to cut your bill just because your Wi-Fi router either (a) has only weak security, or (b) is capable of strong security, but is not configured that way.

You should phrase the question to them in terms of what it would take to configure strong Wi-Fi security on your current router … and if you need to replace it with a newer router. Note that if you are renting it from them, and you suggest that it needs replacement with one that has stronger security, they might take the opportunity to try to raise your bill!
