Scan stopped working on MacBook Pro

Our MacBook Pro running Ventura 13.0.1 cannot scan anymore using our Brother MFC.

What I have tried (following suggestions from this thread):

  1. The recommended approach from System Settings - Printers & Scanners: after clicking the Scan button in the device dialog, the resulting dialog has all buttons disabled greyed out.
  2. Scanning with Image Capture: no device appears in the Image Capture Devices list.
  3. Scanning with "Import from" in Preview:
    1. Scanning with the document feeder activates the feeder and scans the document, but no result ever appears in Preview. The Preview window remains stuck on: "Scanning document "Scanned Image" Page #1".
  4. All of the above after "Open"ing the driver file in /Library/Image Capture/Devices: still no joy.
  5. All of the above again after giving "Everyone" R/W privileges on the driver file:
    1. After changing the format from JPEG to PDF in "Details" and restarting Preview, I was able to also scan from Document Feeder.
    2. Preview scanned an "Overview" from flatbed successfully, but when a "Scan" was attempted, it hung again on: "Scanning document "Scanned Image" Page #1".
    3. Attempts to perform another scan without closing and reopening the "Import from ..." window generally resulted in errors, sometimes a communication error, but more often a mute refusal to do anything.

Any suggestions on how to get this to work as it should would be welcome.

Thanks for the quick response.

I had already read Solve printing problems on Mac - Apple Support and did not find anything helpful there.

As for keeping the MacBook up to date, I have turned on "Automatic updates", with all options enabled.

Why didn't we get the latest OS version?

I was able to update manually using an account with admin privileges, but we normally use non-admin accounts on this machine for security reasons.

P.S. After updating to MacOS Ventura 13.2.1, I see no significant change in behavior. The printer properties in Printers & Scanners still show "Out of paper" when that is not the case (even though the ink levels are reported accurately). Clicking "Open Scanner" in the printer dialog still yields a useless "Scanner" dialog. Only the "Details" button is enabled, and clicking on it yields an empty sidebar. Image Capture still has an empty "Devices" list.

When I installed the MFC under MacOS 12, the interface worked as expected.
