For some unknown reason I can print using AirPrint, but when I try to scan, the scan window remains greyed out.
I can scan using the Brother print and scan app.
Any ideas? Thanks

Go to this Brother web page which is the download support page for macOS 13 drivers. They recommend using AirPrint which is the built-in printer driver. But there are links to a scanner driver, information about iPrint & Scan software, a push scan tool and a firmware update.
It seems to indicate you can only scan using the Brother print and scan software so it's working as they support it.

Apple apparently changed scanning in the newer macOS versions and the older Brother software is required to scan. Which is why the Brother support page mentions needing to install the iPrint & Scan software to enable scanning.

I downloaded the driver, but it didn't make any difference.
What I don't understand, is why it suddenly stopped working after several years of working perfectly.
If all else fails give VueScan a try. They have a full feature demo version what puts a watermark on the resulting scan until a punched activation code is entered. I use it for both my Epson and Canon scanners. I find it to be better than the scanning software that comes with the scanners.
