sorry if this is a really stupid question but do I need to add the number for my local emergency services ie 999 in Uk to the Watch or will it automatically know to call that number in the event of an emergency
I can’t work out whether I need to add anything other than personal contact numbers, say my wife for example, to the emergency contact numbers section

You do not need to add anything. Your watch knows where you are and will dial the correct emergency number for your location if an emergency (hopefully doesn't) arise.
