Thunderbolt display connection cutting in and out

I have a 2017 MacBook Pro connected to an external Thunderbolt display. The connection between the computer and the external monitor occasionally cuts out, leaving the display black. I also lose audio when this happens. This doesn't seem to be a software issue, the signal losss happens when I run Adobe apps or Microsoft apps or any other apps. This has been going on for about a year and is getting worse. MacBook is running Monterey 12.6. It is sometimes helpful if I restart the computer or switch port connections, then the display will work again. My magsafe cable and adapter old, but my local Mac repair people say they do not think it is the physical cable that is the issue.

Those octopus cables fail all the time. Get a TB cable and connect directly to the TB port on the display.
