Apple USB Superdrive does not work with apple USB-c to USB-a adapter

Just got a refurb Apple USB Superdrive to use with my 2019 - 16" MacBook Pro.

Got the Apple USB-C to USB-A adapter too.

When plugged into the MacBook Pro - nothing happens. Obviously not getting power.

I plugged it into my 2013 Trashcan MacPro desktop and it worked immediately. Its not the Superdrive then.

Is there any option to use it with my MacBook Pro??

Hey jephoto,

Is the SuperDrive connected to a USB hub? If so, connect the Superdrive directly to the port on your Mac. This helps confirm whether the issue is related to the hub.

Here's a great article that provides steps on connecting the Apple USB Superdrive: How to connect the Apple USB SuperDrive.

This article shows the list of Macs and which cable/adapter is needed to connect external drives: Identify the ports on your Mac. Once the website loads, scroll to the section labeled "Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C)"

Hope this helps. Take care.

Not through a hub. Direct into laptop's Type C port via reccomended Apple brand USB-C-USB adapter.

As I said, there is NO power coming through when I do this.

OTH when I plug the same Superdrive into my old MacPro with no adapter it immediately worked.

Thanks for this. It actually worked. I reset the SMC, and now it works.

but a new problem- when I ordered this on Amazon I did not realize until afterwards.

so it plays the dvd fine- but I can’t eject it.

something preventing it from popping out, so it pulls it back in again.

now I’m at the Apple Store hoping they can get my disk out so I can return this refurb…

you're welcome.

something preventing it from popping out,

well, here are two separate things you can try to eject a "stuck" disc:

the first is to power down the Mac. then turn it back on and immediately press and hold the mouse button (or the equivalent on the MBP) until the disc pops out.

and the other is to open "terminal" and enter this command:

drutil tray eject

Doubt those things will work. It’s a mechanical issue. It TRIES to eject every time I hit eject or even the eject key on the MacPro extended keyboard.

But it hits some resistance before the edge can pop out, then pulls back in.

it’s just faulty or worn.

if I’d realized it was a refurb before buying I wouldn’t have.

And- there was a disk in the player when I got it. But because it came out when I first plugged into the MacPro, it didn’t occur to me that it was a red flag…

from your description, it does indeed sound like a mechanical failure. but it can't hurt to at least try those suggestions. if it does allow you to eject the disc, you may still want to return the unit, but you will have your disc back. :)
