Apple Books has lost all my documents, is there any hope of recovery?

I thought everything was on my devices, then clouds would start showing up under titles and I would get a "not downloaded" icon popping up. Now everything is gone. When I went to sync with my MacBook, I had to update the software to sync with iPhone. When I signed into iCloud, all my books and documents disappeared on that too. Any course of action suggested?

Turn off iCloud for Books on all devices then turn back on. iPhone > Settings > Books > iCloud Drive. Mac > Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud.

I followed the advice and at first had no improvement. However when I tried again, and just signed out of iCloud on all devices, I tried to test with airdropping a pdf file to my phone,it started repopulating my books. Thanks
