Highlight typed text with Apple Pencil in Notes?

While in Notes on iPadOS, can you highlight text that is typed with an Apple Pencil 2?

I was shocked when I was in a classroom setting (first time in awhile) and was typing notes in Notes app and attempted to highlight with my Apple Pencil 2, it simply wouldn’t allow me.

It seems you can only use the highlight function on Apple Pencil written text or objects. That seems like a huge oversight in the pencil’s/highlighting utility.

I’m running latest iPadOS 16.1 (20B82). Thanks for any guidance on this.

If it doesn’t exist, how can we request this feature formally?
