Text replacements don’t save without a shortcut

Even though the shortcut field says “optional”, I’m unable to save a text replacement without one. They only save if I add a shortcut.

I’m using iOS 16.1.1 on an iPhone 14 Pro.

Hello gleamball,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help resolve the issue so you're able to save the text replacement without the shortcut.

Try these steps to correct the text replacement:

"Have a word or phrase you use and don’t want it corrected?

  1. Go to Settings  > General > Keyboard, then tap Text Replacement.
  2. Tap the Add button at the top right, then enter your word or phrase in the Phrase field, but leave the Shortcut field blank."

This Apple Support page has the full details: Save keystrokes with text replacements on iPhone - Apple Support

This should be the correct way to save the replacement without having to add a shortcut.

Restart your device and try again if the issue continues to help resolve a software issue.

Cheers!
