Mail 'Recovered Messages' folders when deleting from Notifications

So I've had this issue for a while now. I have three IMAP Mail accounts. I get 'Recovered Messages' folders appearing for all three accounts. None contain any messages when they appear. I have since tied this down - they only appear when I choose to delete incoming messages from the notifications banner, when new mail arrives.

Anyone else experience this, and / or have a solution?

Thanks

Hey there machineage,

While this sounds like something for which you may need to contact Apple Support for further help, we'd like to first rule out what we can here in Apple Support Communities:

  1. We see you have macOS 12.6, but the latest version is macOS 12.6.1. You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. This link will show how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac. While the latest version is macOS 13.0, it's not necessary at this time to upgrade to that version.
  2. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section 'Restart' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac
  3. When did this first start?

Cheers!

Hello machineage,

Check out the information on this page: If messages are in a Recovered Messages mailbox in Mail on Mac - Apple Support.

If an email account in the Mail app on your Mac has a Recovered Messages Mailbox in the Mail sidebar, try these suggestions.

- If Mail moved messages to the Recovered Messages mailbox when it updated your email library after a macOS upgrade, drag the messages into another mailbox.

- If messages from a specific mailbox are repeatedly moved to the Recovered Messages mailbox, rebuild that specific mailbox.

You may need to rebuild each of the mailboxes.

1. In the Mail app on your Mac, select a mailbox in the sidebar.
2. Choose Mailbox > Rebuild.

When you rebuild mailboxes for IMAP or Exchange accounts, messages and attachments stored on your Mac are discarded, and then downloaded again from the mail server to your Mac. Your mailbox appears empty until the download is complete.

Kind regards!

Hi @genieen16

Thanks for your reply.

When the folders are generated, they never contain any actual emails, just empty folders. I have rebuilt all three email account inboxes, this didn't eradicate the problem , which still persists.

The only time the folders appear, is when I choose to delete an email from the Notifications banner. The emails do get deleted, and moved to the respective trash bin.

Thanks.
