How to recover Fitness and Health data from a backed-up but unpaired watch?

I recently had to reset my iPhone 14 Pro (iOS 16.0.3) and recover from an iCloud backup from 3 days ago. My iPhone was paired with my Apple Watch Ultra (watchOS 9.1).

When I restored the phone it failed to reconnect to the watch so I clicked "unpair", and then re-paired to it.

Now, my Fitness (and Health) app no longer has a record of any of my previous activities! All my Awards are gone too, etc.

If I go to Settings->Health->Data Access & Devices it lists TWO Apple Watches under "DEVICES". One of the two shows recent data from AFTER re-pairing. The other shows all the past fitness/workout data from before re-pairing, but says "This Watch is no longer paired with this iPhone".

So I know the data still exists! It just isn't getting loaded into the Fitness and Health apps.

I can't pair to that "other" watch because it's physically the same device as the one that is currently paired.

Please help!

Hi pandron,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

We understand that after resetting iPhone and pairing Apple Watch, you are missing some data and have a second data set for health data.

Start by updating iPhone to iOS 16.1. This update has the latest performance fixes. After the update completes, restart paired Apple Watch.

If this hasn't been resolved, unpair Apple Watch and pair it again.

1. Keep your Apple Watch and iPhone close together as you unpair them.
2. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
3. Go to the My Watch tab and tap All Watches.
4. Tap the info button  next to the watch that you want to unpair.
5. Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
6. For GPS + Cellular models, choose to keep or remove your cellular plan.
*If you want to pair your Apple Watch and iPhone again, keep your plan.
*If you don't want to pair your Apple Watch and iPhone again, remove your plan. If you aren't going to pair with a different watch or iPhone, you might need to contact your carrier to cancel your cellular subscription.
7. Tap again to confirm. You might need to enter your Apple ID password to disable Activation Lock. Before erasing all content and settings on your Apple Watch, your iPhone creates a new backup of your Apple Watch. You can use the backup to restore a new Apple Watch. After your Apple Watch unpairs, you'll see the Start Pairing message.
8. Set up your Apple Watch again.
