Missing Arrangements tab under Display & Brightness

Hi, I have an iPad Pro which I have successfully connected to an external monitor and I can mirror the images without a problem. However, I would like to use the external monitor as a second display. I did a little google search and it suggests that you can change this in the arrangements tab under display & brightness however I have no such tab. The only option I have is under ‘connected displays’ which is only listing my connected monitor which has no options to change the display.

Any suggestions?

Unlike PC and Mac computers, with which you are doubtless familiar, iPad doesn’t [as yet] have the equivalent of an extended desktop - supporting content display across multiple displays.

iPad has Screen Mirroring - that reproduces what you can see on the iPad display - on an external TV or monitor. Screen Mirroring does exactly as its name implies; the iPad screen is reproduced on the external display, preserving both the content and aspect ratio of the iPad screen.

AirPlay extends capabilities of iPad - permitting display of playing media content (either download or streamed) to an external TV or monitor, at full resolution and aspect ratio of the source material, independently of the iPad screen. This capability, however, does not extend to other Apps such as video conferencing.

Also consider that in a touch-UI environment, an extended desktop would make no sense; you would not be able to interact with Apps that were only visible on the external monitor.

iPad however can be used to extend the desktop of a PC or Mac computer - using applications such as Duet and Sidecar.

I hope this information and insight is helpful in addressing your question.

A simple Google of iPad Pro running IOS 16 will show multiple reviewers using the external display in an extended desktop mode (i.e. not mirrored). There are even demonstrations of the arrange option. So this feature definitely exists and has been made available to some people. Also, you can easily interact with the external display using a mouse, just as you can with the current mirrored display.

Evidently, this feature was available in earlier betas of IOS 16 but is not currently. As IOS 16 for iPad is still in beta, this functionality is not promised. Hopefully it will be available in the final release for Pro users.

(I asked this question a few days ago and got a similar answer to this but my question seems to have disappeared.)

I’m fully aware of iPadOS16 betas. Anything that you may have seen or heard in context of future functionality is entirely provisional - and subject to change; by their very nature, beta software will contain bugs and unfinished features, in addition to experimental functionality that may or may not reach the production version upon release. Actual functionality will only be known upon production release of iPadOS16, this being anticipated to occur later this month.
