iPhone connects and disconnects from mac?

My iPhone continuously connects and disconnects from my MacBook Air computer. I have tried about 5 different suggestions on this site and none have worked, I fear it may be because my MacBook is outdated but I can't update it because it's too old of a model, could this be why? Any other suggestions
