I have smarter mail hosted by CFHost. after my apple mail app has been working fine for years all of a sudden, all mail in my inbox disappeared. All other folders remain intact. I tried deleting and reinstalling account to no avail. gmail account still works fine. What do I do?

Have you checked Mail's Trash to see if the emails are there?
Go to the website for the email account and see if the emails are there, either in the Inbox or the Trash.
