mail app won't delete messages

my mail app keeps closing & I get error messages saying that mailbox is too full & that I need to delete messages.

the problem is i continually delete batch messages & they never seem to delete & every time I open my email it tries to load big batches of messages, the ones that I've already deleted? I use gmail

Does anyone know why this is happening?
