Older Versions of Garageband

Probably been asked before, but I couldn't find anything, so...

I have an older MacBook Air (late 2012). It still works great but when I try to download GB I get the message that I need a newer OS (I have OS X Yosemite 10.10.5). So I tried software updater to update the OS but this says no updates are available. Presumably because the hardware is now older.

So is there a previous version of Garageband that I can download? Tried Google searches etc but got nowhere.

ps I'm a MacBook novice - the one I have was my daughter's old one!

Thanks...

Hi P_J_M,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you’re trying to download Garage Band but need a newer version of macOS to do so. I’m happy to provide some information. You should be able to upgrade to macOS Mojave with the model of Mac you have. You can find steps for doing so below:

How to upgrade to macOS Mojave - Apple Support

From there, you should be able to download Garage Band.

If that doesn’t help, feel free to reply with additional details.

Take care.

Still baffled as to why the machine's own software updater said no updates were available, but I got there.

The updates can be confusing. The software update only shows minor updates to current system. 10.10.5 has been the last update for Yosemite.

To get from Yosemite to the next major releases (El Capitan, Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, etc), you had to install the next system upgrade. The System Upgrade requires a (free) purchase from the AppStore and is not shown as an update.

Have you seen the online Help for GarageBand? https://help.apple.com/garageband/mac/10.3/

Alex

Thanks for your post. As it happens, I contacted Apple Support on their chat utility yesterday. I chatted to a very helpful chap called Kyle who advised the same thing. So I headed over to the App Store and updated the OS to Mojave. Still baffled as to why the machine's own software updater said no updates were available, but I got there.

Garageband is therefore now installed in my machine. Haven't a clue how to use it fully yet, but I'll get there!!

Thanks again....
