I was in the process of resetting/erasing the disk but there are files and CS4, Logic and Animation software remaining. I changed the PRAM battery, it worked for a bit and most of the files are backed up. But they are still in the computer which has no power.

That is correct. A 3.5" bare hard drive requires a USB to SATA adapter with an external power supply.

Open the iMac back up, remove the Hard Drive and recycle the rest.
Put the Hard Drive on a USB to SATA adapter or in a 3.5" Drive Dock to recover the remaining data.
Then you can erase and reuse or.. drill holes, smash and recycle the Hard Drive.
Thanks, So far I've tried a basic SATA to USB adapter (without power). The LED’s on the adapter lit up but nothing on screen. And no clicking or whirring sounds from the hard drive. It may need more power to work in this way.
FWIW, if you are going to recycle it anyway, I'm sure you can get it open and smash the innards with a hammer without the need of specialized tools.
