iPhone adds +1 to numbers and making them undeliverable

My phone has my contacts listed numbers like (315) ***-****

When I try to text to one of those numbers, a 1 gets added to the front of the number, and then I get an undeliverable message saying the number has too many digits.

It's an Iphone 7 with software version 15.8.4

This just started happening the last few days. How can I make it stop?

Assuming you’re in the U.S. and your message recipient is as well, “too many digits” is not the problem. Something else is going on.

Sending a message to “1315*******” (where “*” represents a digit), an eleven digit mobile phone number, is perfectly acceptable.
