Why won't Siri respond when I say 'Hey Siri' or 'Siri' anymore on my iPhone?

As of just a day ago, when I say "hey Siri", I no longer hear any verbal response such as

”mm hmm,” or “hmm,” or “yes,” or “I’m listening.” I have tried everything. I went to Siri & Search > Siri Responses, and made sure “prefer spoken responses.” I restarted my phone. I reset all my settings. I turned Siri off and retrained it on my voice. Siri is also set to listen for “hey Siri” or “Siri.” Yet I still get no confirmation that Siri has picked up my voice, and it is fairly common for Siri to not pick up my voice when prompted.

This lack of response is especially concerning because I use the call and response feature to help me find my phone when I’ve misplaced it. As someone who is HOH, it was bad enough Apple got rid of the loud chime that indicated Siri actually heard you in favor of the hard to hear “mmm hmm?” Now there’s nothing?

Every thread I’ve found on this issue from Apple states iOS 18+ gets rid of Siri’s audio feed back, like confirmation it is listening, because processors are advanced enough that Siri doesn’t need to confirm, you can launch right into your question (except Siri doesn’t always pick up on the “hey Siri” command). So, I don’t think updating will help.

I did a factory reset of my phone, and that seemed to work. It was a pain in the a**, but it worked.

For others who come to this thread and don’t want to update (because Apple uses updates to brick phones): don’t forget to try going to accessibility > Siri and making sure “Always listen for Siri” is on. It might just be that your phone was facing down and this feature wasn’t enabled.

Or a factory reset.

Hi there 👋

If Siri has stopped responding to “Hey Siri” or just “Siri”, you’re not alone — this change has been noticed by several users after recent updates like iOS 17.5.1.

Here are a few things you can try that have helped others:

  1. Double-check Siri Settings
  2. Go to Settings > Siri & Search and make sure both “Listen for ‘Siri’” and “Allow Siri when Locked” are turned on. Sometimes they get reset after updates.
  3. Accessibility Option
  4. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Siri and ensure “Always Listen for ‘Siri’” is enabled — especially helpful if the phone might be face-down or in a case.
  5. Update to the Latest iOS
  6. If you’re still on iOS 17.5.1, consider updating to iOS 18.5 (if available) — some users have found this fixes voice recognition issues.
  7. Restart or Reset (if needed)
  8. Sometimes a quick restart helps. A factory reset is a last resort — but good to know it helped someone here!

Let us know how it goes — happy to keep helping if needed 😊

Good luck!

There is no such thing as a recent update to iOS 17.5.1 on an iPhone 13. For one thing iOS 17.5.1 is not even a signed version anymore and any iOS 17 update would be 17.7.2 and for the other, an update on the iPhone 13 now would be to iOS 18.5. Your post may have been relevant over a year ago when iOS 17.5.1 was released, but certainly not relevant to the OP who identified the problem yesterday.

My friend's iphone 13 with v 18.5 is having this problem - Siri has gone silent in the last 24 hours.
I have checked all his Siri settings and I have reset Siri and powered down then powered back on again, checked network connection and volume settings.... it still is silent.

I recommend you send feedback to Apple here. We have had numerous complaints on this support site where users can't stand having an activation response from Siri, especially when it says "mm hmm", and they were always directed to send feedback to Apple also. In a case where you have 2 groups that want Siri to do different things, it may require a Setting specifically for an activation response and the feedback is the only way for you to let Apple know. Since there is not a specific Siri topic, you will need to choose a device, then detail what you want Siri to do. There have already been many sent from those saying they don't want Siri to respond on activation.
