Why does Books only show the first page of each chapter after updating to iOS 18.5?

When I updated to iOS 18.5 books started only showing the first page of each chapter. I have looked at several of my books- including ones I have read before so this isn’t a formatting issue on the books part. Also when I look at the table of contents it is only showing the same number of pages for the book as chapters.

UPDATE: After several hours with Apple Support over several days, the rather unsatisfying answer was that something about the .epub formatting is no longer acceptable but they can't figure out what changed that it suddenly became no good. They recommended using a different reader. I successfully loaded my book to the kindle app on my iPad by dragging the file into https://www.amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle and then asking for delivery to the particular device. It is in the docs section of your library which becomes visible if you click the filters icon (lines with slider circles), which is also where other epubs and pdfs would be. Hope this helps.

I personally like Gerty if you are reading on a phone. Sadly no iPad app yet. Good visuals, lots of customization, built-in stats tracking, "infinite scrolling" format still respects chapter breaks, dark mode compatibility, etc. Easily load books saved in iCloud drive, although you will need to select them one at a time, so it's a bit of a pain to import a whole library. Can sync over Dropbox or Google Drive, but I find iCloud works well enough.
