How is the stability of FCP 11.1 on macOS 15.5?

I see that 15.5 is available for install. Tom, Luis, Joema, Ben, have you tried it with FCP 11.1?

It was reported on M2 Max and MacBook Pro M4 Air. I reproduced it on M1 Ultra. It might be Apple-Silicon specific. The test clip I used was 60 seconds, 4k/23.98 10-bit 4:2:2 HEVC. I plan on testing other codecs and machines, and isolating the version where this appeared (maybe 11.0?), but I haven't done that yet.

Since Apple Silicon was released, there have been several bugs specific to Apple Silicon (not Intel) and a few specific to M-series CPUs with multiple encode/decode units such as Max/Ultra. Recently, we had a bug reported that was unique to M4. So it can take considerable testing to feel out possible dependencies on specific M-series versions.

If the Japan user could take a spindump of FCP when hung, I'll examine it. Two ways to invoke spindump on Final Cut Pro: (1) From command line, (2) From Activity Monitor:

From command line (terminal):

  • sudo spindump "Final Cut"
  • It will put the file in /tmp/Final_Cut_Pro_3178.spindump.txt
  • To see this in Finder, do SHIFT+CMD+. (Shift + Command key + period key, all at the same time)

From Activity Monitor:

  • Select Final Cut Pro in Activity Monitor
  • Do View>Run Spindump
  • Enter system password
  • When complete, in upper-right corner, select "Save As" and provide filename

Zip or compress file and upload to here: https://we.tl/r-SoCdwheEdK

Note: The app must be in a persistent hung state for at least 15 sec for this to have meaning. If it is only a 2-3 sec beachball, that's probably not long enough.

I updated to 15.5 two days ago. Since then Final Cut 11.1.1 isn't working anymore. I uninstalled and installed it again, no change. It opens, but when I click anything the beachball comes up and nothing is happening anymore. I tried it with the library on the local ssd and on an external ssd, no difference.
Before the update to 15.5 everything was fine. I didn't change anything else.
I would appreciate any help... Thanks you!

Start by deleting FCP preferences. It is probably better to start a new thread and include an Etrecheck report.

This one, which has not changed

Spindump has been uploaded.

I factory reset my MacBook Air, installed only FCP, and tried applying Gaussian →Shape. It doesn't seem to work 100% anymore, but it still freezes if I preview for a while after applying Gaussian →Shape, or move the seek bar several times while playing.
