New contacts gone and iMessages showing numbers not names

Yesterday before updating to 18.5 I noticed randomly that in iMessages was showing contact numbers instead of their saved names. So I updated thinking that would help but now I just noticed some newer contacts are no longer saved as well as iMessages showing older contacts that are still saved but showing their numbers. I tried the short name toggle, restarting the phone. Iphone16 pro plus

These are contacts I have had for years. The text history and attachments remain, but it just shows as the phone number and not the contact name. Contacts disappearing on iphone 14 16.3.1 I’ve seen multiple posts on this issue and I’ve yet to see Apple respond with a solution that works. I have an iphone14 with 16.3.1. As people text me, their contact information just disappears. It happens to about 3 people who text me a week. The icon at the top of the text message will still show their initials but all other info in the contact will be lost. I have to create a new contact with the phone number that now appears where their name should be. It’s been going on for about 6 months and is incredibly frustrating. Apple keeps saying to restore contacts in other posts on this issue but that does not fix the fact that they just keep randomly disappearing. Lots of people with this problem, including several I work with … anything else we can try Apple?
