Apple Music favorite songs playing backward after macOS Sequoia 15.5 update

Greetings everyone,

I am simply writing to see if anyone else has this issue:

After the latest 15.5 OS update on my Apple Silicon MacBook Pro - the one without the Touch Bar - my Apple Music Favorite Songs now advances backward. From end to beginning.

Furthermore -

  • When I use the Forward key (F9), it advances... backward,
  • When I use the Backward key (F7), it advances forward to the next song.

The exact same inversion happens when I -

  • Click on the >> or the << buttons on the application itself,
  • Double Tap or Triple Tap my AirPods Pro.

Note: This does not happen with any other playlist. Also, the Favorite Songs (stars) is an automated playlist that cannot be edited.

I have tried the normal approaches, like:

  • Shift settings back and forth,
  • Reboot the system,
  • Shutdown the system entirely - turn it on the next day.

Thus, I trust this is a bug - as it happens on one playlist. The Favorite Songs one.

For some additional information, somewhat related, and which I resolved -

A few OS updates prior (I believe the 15.3 series), there was a similar issue, which applied to all playlists and albums. It was, again, on Apple Music - on MacOS (MacBook Pro):

  • When a song finished playing, it would advance 3 songs by itself (no shuffle option active),
  • When I used the keyboard's "Next Song" (F9), the >> button on the application, or the Double Tap on my EarPods Pro, it would advance 3 songs,
  • When I used the keyboard's "Previous Song" (F7), the << button on the application, or the Triple Tap on my EarPods Pro, it would normally go back one song.

The culprit to the above behavior was the "CrossFade Songs" Playback Option.

This, however, does not apply to the current issue.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Favorite Songs playlist?

Thank you!

Yup, facing the same issue here, also I've tried running the app in secure mode. I've tried changing the sort order and it always plays using 'Date Added, Ascending'.

Anyway, I just uploaded a feedback request through the Feedback app, hopefully they'll take the feedback and fix the bug.

Thank you for responding, turingtest2.

I have it in descending order, which means the latest comes up first.

The sorting order played no role in the past, as the playback functionality was normal.

I switched it to the ascending order now, but it produces another glitch:

It advances normally with the forward function, but when I hit the backward, it jumps two songs back. Then, two songs ahead. In short, the same issue a previous update had.

Switching back to descending, the glitch remains - only reversed. I hit back, it jumps two songs forward. I hit forward, it jumps two songs backward.

Thank you for the tip, per the safe mode.

I tried it, though it behaves exactly the same. Also, when I select to play the Favorite Songs list, it starts from the bottom - based on what I added first. Now, it has a new feature. Or rather a bug that is still not fixed. I tested by activating the "CrossFade" option, just to test it out. With it on, when I press the "back" button, it jumps ahead 2, 3 or 4 songs. This is becoming rather comedic.

Anyhow, I believe I have found the solution:

In the View Menu - Select "View As Songs" and not "As Playlist".

This solves the playback issue, including the back and forth buttons. Yay!
