How do I fix Wi-Fi calling issues on my iPhone with iOS 18.5?

Hi there, I have recently purchased a iPhone 16 pro. - IOS - 18.5 previously I had a iPhone 12

Since the IOS 18 upgrade I have had issues with wifi calling on my iphone 12. I had not reported the issue as I thought that it may have been due to the old tech and I wanted to upgrade to the 16 anyhow.

I am now operating the iPhone 16 Pro, but I am experiencing the same issues.

When making calls using wifi calling the iphone does not show it is connected nor do I get a ringing tone on the iphone, however the call is actually being made in the background. The person I am calling picks up there phone and they can not hear me. The iPhone does not indicate the call is connected and I can not hear them. I know this as I have tested with friends.

I have reset all my network settings since receiving the new phone. Removed wifi networks and updated carrier settings. I have tried turning off the private wifi address in the wifi settings of the network / router I am using. I have tested this on multiple different wifi networks with the same results.

We have zero network coverage at my home address and always rely on wifi calling. Can you please help.

Regards

Recommended Troubleshooting

1. Disable Wi-Fi Assist (if enabled):

  • Go to Settings > Cellular
  • Scroll down and turn off Wi-Fi Assist
  • This prevents the phone from switching to weak cellular networks automatically, which can interfere with Wi-Fi calling in low/no coverage areas.

2. Toggle Wi-Fi Calling Off and Back On:

  • Go to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling
  • Turn Wi-Fi Calling off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on

3. Check Date & Time Settings:

  • Go to Settings > General > Date & Time
  • Ensure Set Automatically is enabled
  • Incorrect time sync may cause call routing issues over Wi-Fi.

4. Confirm VoLTE and Carrier Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data
  • Make sure VoLTE is enabled (if supported by your carrier)
  • Some networks require VoLTE to properly route Wi-Fi calls.

5. Reinstall iOS via Finder/iTunes (optional advanced step):

If the issue persists, doing a clean install of iOS 18.5 via Finder (Mac) or iTunes (PC) may help resolve potential update-related software issues.

Final Steps:

If none of the above resolves the problem, I recommend contacting your mobile carrier to confirm that Wi-Fi Calling is properly provisioned for your account. There may be backend settings that need refreshing after device upgrades or iOS updates.

Additionally, I'd suggest reporting the bug to Apple via Apple Feedback, as this helps their engineering team investigate recurring issues affecting newer iOS versions.
