Glad to hear you've made alternate arrangements that are working for you. See Update Apple Home - Apple Support for background to this. The key detail is that upgrading to the new architecture removes support for iPad to serve as a Home Hub.

Before you update

  • Update your iPhoneiPadMacApple TVHomePod and Apple Watch to the latest software. Any device that is connected to an updated home and not running iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, tvOS 16.2 or watchOS 9.2 or later will lose access to an updated home until the device is updated. This includes people that you invite to control your home.
  • To share control of your home and receive Home notifications on the latest version of Apple Home, you must set up a home hub, such as an Apple TV or HomePod.
  • iPad is not supported as a home hub on the latest version of Apple Home.
