Ipad IOS update 18.5 bricked my device and I am unable to restore

I just attempted to update my iPad to IOS 18.5 (I think) using my MacBook Air. I got a message that the update failed and it gave me the option to Recover and Update. That failed as well and I got a message about being unable to recover and the number or code 4041.

I have tried the troubleshooting steps provided by Apple including the reset by holding down power button and home button. iPad screen shows that it wants to be connected to a computer to recover but the recover has failed multiple times. My MacBook Air wants a new update but I already have one bricked device so I am not doing that yet.

Anyone else seeing issues with the mid May 2025 update and/or have any ideas?

Ever since the update (and not before) my iPad randomly kills wifi and asks for a restart (I can then log into my wifi again). This happens when the iPad is idle and locked (but not every time). I have tried hard reset, network reset and a full factory reset. The network and factory reset worked for about one day but then the problem started to occur again. The problem occurs even when I close all apps (so I assume it is not an app incompatibility with iPadOS 18.5).

The iPad has more than sufficient memory and, timing wise, is definitely linked to the 18.5 update.

You may have tried some of this already...

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

My 7th gen iPad; September 2019 - has bricked. Either during the 18.5 update process or just after. No amount of pushing of buttons at the same time will bring up a recovery mode. Plugging into one of my other Macs does nothing. Anyone have an idea or two?

I have serious issues with iPadOS update 18.5 as it makes my iPad 7 very difficult to work with.
