Why does my stolen iPhone shows as "erase pending" in Find My?

Hello all,

My iPhone was stolen and I marked it as lost/stolen and requested content erasure. However, after a couple of days when I open FindMy I only see "erase pending" but there's no reference to the lost/stolen status (whether it's pending, or whether it's been successfully erased).

Is this normal? Has the erasing requested superseded the report as lost/stolen status? My FindMy doesn't show the option to mark it as stolen/lost any more.

Thanks

"Erase Pending" means that the phone does not have a connection to the Internet. Some of the possible reasons or combinations of reasons for this are:

The phone was powered off

The battery has run down

The thief has wrapped aluminum foil around the phone so that it cannot send or receive a message

The phone is On, the battery is OK, but the phone is not connected to your cellular carrier or to Wi-Fi

When the phone is powered on, the battery is OK and the phone has a good Internet connection, the Erase will occur. Unfortunately, there is not really anything that you can do about this other than log on using Find My several times a day to see if the status of the phone has changed.

My question is why doesn't it show lost/stolen status.

Same reasons. The phone does not have an Internet connection to report on its status.

You might have requested that the phone be placed in Lost Mode, but you cannot confirm that this occurred unless you actually saw the change in status status in Find My when you requested that the phone be placed in Lost Mode.

On the other hand, it is possible that the phone was placed in Lost Mode when you made the request, but the Internet connection was lost shortly thereafter, so the true status of the phone remains unknown at this time.

Apple states it this way:

When you mark a device as lost, it won't appear online and in Lost Mode until the device is turned on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular.

If you try to log on using Find My again.........do you see a message the phone is "Offline"? If you do, the current status of the phone cannot be known.

If you did not actually see the status change when you originally tried to enable Lost Mode on the phone, then Lost Mode was not implemented.

Unfortunately, you won't know much at all about the phone's actual current status unless and until it has a reliable Internet connection.

Unfortunately again.......iPhone thieves know this.
