How to set up dual monitors, 2 computers (1 Mac Mini M2, 1 PC), and shared peripherals using a KVM switch?
Hey everyone, I'm looking for some help on how to setup 2 different computers, 2 monitors and 1 set of peripherals. I know I might need a KVM switch more than likely. Unless I wanted to do a weird setup where I buy expensive monitors that already have KVM switches built into them and use the monitors OSD menu to switch, which takes way longer and can be glitchy. I already have a KVM for my current setup (1 PC, 1 Macbook Air, 1 Monitor, 1 set of peripherals and it works just fine). But I'm changing my setup soon and don't know how to do what I want.
Also, I have not purchased the new monitors yet, but have one in mind. I also, if possible, want this KVM switch or setup to be 100Hz or higher refresh rate, for gaming. The monitors I'm looking at buying a pair of, are 27" 1440p 100-144Hz refresh rate. And most to all of the KVM switches I see are 4k@60Hz at best. So that makes me wonder, can you even get 100 or 144Hz with a KVM switch, dual monitors and 1 PC, 1 Mac setup?
I'm going to be setting up my dream desk setup very soon and will have 2 computers and 2 monitors. So, I'm still going to have my custom built PC I made myself, but then instead of my old Macbook Air laptop, I'm getting a newer Mac Mini M2 to replace it (the macbook air is old and I can't even get updates anymore). And then I'm getting 2 identical monitors (they have 2 HDMI's and 1 Display Port on them). So what I'm looking to do is a few things.
1. Sometimes I will want to just use the PC with both monitors and the mouse, keyboard, speakers
2. Other times I will want to use the Mac Mini with both monitors and the mouse, keyboard, speakers
3. Other times I will want to use the PC on one monitor and the Mac Mini on the other monitor (so I can do personal computing on one and watch sports on the other)
4. Other times I will want to use the PC to game on one monitor and use the Mac Mini on the other monitor for personal computing, or having videos or maps up that help me with the game or putting a sports match on
I've been doing a lot searching and watching of videos and not really finding much help. I've seen like 1-2 videos that even mention a Mac in this type of setup (loads of two PC dual monitor setups), but aren't very good and don't explain. And so far, the only product I've seen that I "think" could work is this TESmart KVM. But they all cost like 170-200 or more dollars. No thanks. Plus, on Amazon, they have really poor reviews from lots of people.
I also have just recently in my research realized that maybe the sticking point here is the Mac. I've seen ALL sorts of videos and switches for 2 PCs. But since Macs mostly use TB, it's throwing a wrench in things. Plus, I don't even know how TB works as far as what it can handle? Do I need two of them plus a USB to go from the Mac Mini to the KVM switch just like the PC's need? Or does TB do all the video and data sending in the one TB cable? Then, all the KVM switches that might work, show a USB-C, not a TB. And most of them even say something about how Mac TB doesn't support multiple monitors or something to that effect. I'm really lost and need some help if anyone knows.
I just happened upon this thing today in my research called a TB dock? And it looks like it "might" be something that allows me to setup in between my Mac Mini and the KVM or monitors? But those on avg are even more expensive than the expensive KVM switches! They're like $250-400!?!?! Plus I don't know if I need one or not?
Another thing I'm also not sure how it will work is the sound? I don't want to have two sets of speakers for obvious reasons. So how do I set that all up as well? Can I have sound coming from the speakers and the PC, while the Mac Mini just uses the monitors built in speakers? And then vice versa? Will I chose one computer/monitor to be the "main" one for the speakers on the KVM switch? And then the other computer/monitor just uses that monitors built in crappy speakers for sound? And then anytime I want, I just hit the KVM switch and the sound changes to whatever the "main" computer/monitor is? is that how that works or some other way?
Any help is much appreciated. I'm not getting anywhere with this and finding little to no help through searching. Thank you
