Unable to add fingerprint for Touch ID setup on my new Mac mini

all new setup new mac mini 4 with new touch id keyboard. You tube video demos a visual that shows image like on my iphone to add fingerprint. all attempts on my mac mini say a login password has been set for this user change. when engage the add fingerprint is a black box and nothing happens
