How do I prevent apps from overriding volume settings on iPhone 12 mini?

iPhone 12 mini, OS version 18.3.2

Is there a way to actually force the volume slider to stay muted regardless what apps dictate?

Because I tried:

  • sliding the volume down all the way until it's muted (icon with a strike)
  • switching on the physical silent mode button
  • turning on focus mode

None of these settings prevent an app to change the volume slider on their whim.

What I can see the app did is:

  1. turn up the volume slider
  2. play sound
  3. turn volume slider back down the to original setting (in my case muted)

I don't want this. If I'm sliding my volume all the way down, I'm telling my phone to STAY silent.

Some of the apps I have, they don't even make any sound even when I'm sliding the volume up IF the silent mode button is switched on. That's the behavior I want, not apps being able to change the volume control on their own.

On your iPhone 12 mini running iOS 18, apps can sometimes override your volume settings due to the way iOS handles audio sessions. While iOS doesn't offer per-app volume controls by default, you can take the following steps to minimize unexpected volume changes:

Disable 'Change with Buttons': Navigate to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and turn off Change with Buttons. This prevents the side buttons from altering the ringer and alert volumes, helping to maintain consistent volume levels across apps.

Use Control Center for Media Volume: Access the Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen. Here, you can adjust the media volume slider, which controls the audio for music, videos, and other media, independently from the ringer volume.

Limit Maximum Volume: To prevent apps from playing audio at excessively high volumes, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Volume Limit. Enable Limit Maximum Volume and set your desired maximum volume level. This setting helps ensure that no app can exceed the volume limit you've specified.

If you continue to experience issues with specific apps overriding your volume settings, consider reaching out to the app developers for support, as some apps may have their own volume controls or settings that need adjustment.

This is not what I want.

  1. Disable 'Change with Buttons - already off.
  2. Use Control Center for Media Volume - irrelevant, because that's the issue. Even if you have adjusted the volume yourself, any iOS app can override that.
  3. Limit Maximum Volume - irrelevant, not looking to set max volume.

Is this not a provided feature in iOS? If so, where do I put feedback or request for this feature?
