"CardDAV account verification failed" error on iPhone after iOS 18.4 update

iOS 18.4 appears to have ended CardDav support. Since upgrading to 18.4 my iPhone no longer shows contact names in Messages and "Google CardDav Accounts" in Settings shows "Contacts Account CardDav account verification failed OK". Alternatively on the "Contacts Accounts" page a pop up box shows "Password Incorrect Enter the password for the CardDav account 'Google CardDav Contacts".

The password entered is correct.

Consequently Messages are beginning to show phone numbers instead of names. 'Recents' in the phone app shows only phone numbers with small fonts beneath saying "Maybe: [Name of caller in Contacts]. 'Contacts' in the phone app shows 'No Contacts'.

Will Apple be fixing this or is CardDav permanently removed as a feature?

In the few days since this bug and/or removal of support in 18.4 was reported all of my Contacts have now disappeared. Apple still does not appear to have confirmed the removal of CardDav from iOS 18.4 and they have provided no solution to this frustrating lack of reliability.

You may have enabled two step verification on Google --> Sign in with App Passwords - Google Account Help

If you have 2-Step Verification (2SV) or 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) enabled on your Google account, your regular Google account password will not work for signing in on certain platforms or apps that do not support modern authentication methods (like OAuth). This includes some older iOS devices, mail apps, calendar apps, and other third-party services.

In these cases, you must generate an "App Password"—a special, one-time 16-character password provided by Google—that acts as a substitute for your regular password on that specific device or app.

hi with your inputs i am able to get the verification done but even after doing the verification and putting the app generated password - the contacts are not syncing and its giving error of password incorrect to sync the contacts the contacts…. any suggestions

I have never enabled 2FA and I won't be. The only thing I did was upgrade to 18.4.
