I have a Macbook with OS Catalina 10.15.7. I just updated to that version and it won't update any higher. When I updated my Microsoft Office items were deleted and Pages won't download because of the old OS. What other alternative word processors are available from the app store? Libre won't work either.

Did you install a previous version of Pages on your system? If so, you should be able to restore Pages to the last compatible version for your system
Check App Store -> Profile -> Purchased and see if Pages is listed. If so, you should be able to reinstall it.
If you ever installed Pages directly from the Mac App Store since Oct 2013, and it was not preinstalled by Apple or a reseller, you can likely get Pages v11.1 for macOS Catalina. Otherwise, you cannot.
Launch the Mac App Store on Catalina and ensure that you are signed into it using the same Apple ID that you used previously. Press cmd+0 (zero) to open the Purchase panel. If Pages is shown, there will be a download symbol by it. Click that and do not click Cancel for any dialog. The last dialog will ask if you want to install the last compatible version of Pages for Catalina. You know what to do.
The current version 25.2.2 of the free LibreOffice Suite is still supported on macOS Catalina. As an MS Office clone, it will open, allow you to edit, and save your existing Microsoft Office documents. Be certain that you select the macOS (Intel) version.
LibreOffice should work.
