Word not updating since catalina upgrade

My wife and I both have MacBooks. I recently upgraded my wife's computer to the same OS that I use - Catalina. But now Word doesn't work on her computer and will not update.

Oddly, it works on my MacBook.

Confused and need some advice.

I have tried getting the Word update from the App store but when I try to install I get an error message saying I need a later version of the Mac OS. All very frustrating.

Help???

Office 2016 and earlier versions have all fallen off Microsoft support, and updates have ended.


Microsoft supports its apps on the three most recent macOS versions.

MacBook Pro (Late 2013 or later) can get to macOS 11 Big Sur, which is the antepenultimate version for another few days when macOS 14 Sonoma becomes available. MacBook Pro (Early 2015 or later) can get to macOS 12 Monterey, which will be third soon. Etc.


Apple iWork apps Pages, Numbers, and Keynote can read and write most Office documents, and the apps are free. Also available at no purchase cost is LibreOffice.


Best to ask Office for Mac questions over in the Microsoft forums. More folks over there know about and use Microsoft tooling.
