File sharing stopped working after macOS 13.7.5 update

File sharing stopped working after 13.7.5 update between 2 macs (both with 13.7.5).

Anyone with the same issue pls?

I am 100% sure it is the 13.7.5 fault, because it worked just before I ran the updates on both computers.

(Intel Macbook, I can't upgrade to macos 14)

Yes, I tried to disable file sharing, reset mac and enable it again :-)

Using finder click Go, then Connect to Server. Enter the following: smb://name of computer._smb._tcp.local/name of shared folder. Enter credentials of shared folder user and password and it worked. I don't know why, but this has been a real problem for the last 10 days. Hope this works for you too.

Thanks for the hint, this works for me to connect from an El Capitan MacBook Pro to a Ventura MacBook Air.

What's also odd with this bug:

In the file sharing info window in System Settings, the note "Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" displays a completely unrelated random IP address, not the standard 192.168.1.xxx from my LAN IP range.

Usually we use VLC on the iPad to watch archived TV recordings *) stored on a HD attached to our old Time Capsule (gen. 4, 2012), and using SMB1 is apparently the required protocol here.

The Files app can't connect to the Time Capsule. Readdle Documents app can.

So a Mac Pro 2010 is probably about as limited as that 2012 Time Capsule.

*) don't ask… ;) my late dad was obsessed with recording all his favorite shows and movies…

I would like to try this:

>This "smb://name of computer._smb._tcp.local/name of shared folder"

method works for me also as a workaround, but what a thing for Apple to

break!<

Please, can someone supply a step by step where to put "smb://name of computer._smb._tcp.local/name of shared folder" ?

Which machine(s?) in the home network does it go on and where? Does "name of computer" mean name of home network? Does local/name of shared folder refer to the name of an external drive if that is what is desired to be shared?

Sorry to be a luddite on this, but would really appreciate detailed guidance on how and where to insert that line.

TIA

StephenHarrington thank you for your response to my post.

If I tell you that one of my Ventura machines is a 2013 'trashcan' Mac Pro you'l realise that I already use the method you prescribed to update! But it seems Apple has removed that post anyway! 🤣

I love my Mac Pro and use it as a music server which plays all day, every day in my office. It now has a 4TB NVME SSD and I have rebuilt and fully serviced it many, many times to prolong its life. It's testament to the quality of the original design, components and fixings that this machine can be stripped down, properly serviced and rebuilt with confidence. There are no tiny ribbon cables, glued components or non-removable parts to hinder progress. Oh how I wish they were still built this way!

Figured they would but I'm new here so worth a try. Love a trashcan! Used one for many years at work back in the day, mainly as a video transcoding workhorse. Never missed a beat despite being treated brutally often 18 hours a day.

Since you've got Ventura going I suggest you try out Sequoia in a cloned partition on your SSD - worth experimenting. Bit of a brute force method of solving the 13.7.5 sharing issue, but it does work. Not sure how "the hack that cannot be named" and 15.5 do on a trashcan. Most likely it will be the final macOS that will install on Intel anyway if rumours are true?

StephenHarrington thanks for the suggestion, but my Mac Pro will connect to any non-Ventura 13.7.5/6 equipped Mac, so the problem is surmountable.

The Mac Pro is the machine I use as my 'master' music server and where I manage additions. But I just built up a 2019 iMac 21.5in with a VESA mount to put on the wall in my house. That runs Sonoma, so it is easy to copy over new music as and when I load it on the Mac Pro because connection works to Sonoma even with 13.7.6.

I'm very protective of my music library as it stems from many moons ago. It is frequently updated as high resolution versions of albums become available. I've thought about subscribing to Apple Music but I remember the mess iTunes Match made of my music years ago. Fortunately I had it backed up but lost all the correct album art, playlists and play counts...

Never again!

With the update to 13.7.6 the Samba connection between Android Mobile and MacPro was working again and I have to admit I was very happy about that. However I heard rumors that things will fail with the first reboot of the mac.

This was the case now. Can somone help me? Is there a workaround except for avoding Apple for the rest of my life?

The new version presents other problems. If I am streaming from my desktop to my laptop video files, no matter what media player I use—MOvist Pro, VLC, Quicktime—the video and the audio will sometimes stutter, but more often the media player will crash. Reopening the file goes back to the beginning rather than rejoining where it crashed.

This started immediately after the recent update to 13.7.7—the problem was never seen before 13.7.7

Anyone else seeing this?

Aug 13, 2025 10:01 PM in response to MMalias

13.7.7 introduced a new problem. When watching a video over my home network, no matter what video player I use, will crash after about 5-6 minutes tops, sometime shorter. This happens with VLC, QT, Movist, and IINA. Movist is the worst in this regard often only going about 3 minutes before crashing, then VLC, then IINA, but again, the longest I can go is about 5-6 minutes before a crash.

If I reload the video file on any of the players, rather than going to the spot where it crashed, it reopens the file from the beginning. Sometimes, if I go back to the file after a period of time it will reopen at the crash point, but that is rare.

I've re-installed 13.7.7 without relief, I am now reinstalling Sequoia on my peripheral computer...Mac Mini M1.

All video players were working 100% fine before 13.7.5. I've run disk utility to check for errors...nothing amiss.
