It has been 18 hours. iMac has been stalled on black screen with Apple saying "estimated time remaining" for 17 hours or more. I've seen some comments that say it took as long as 24 hours but finally finished. Is there any new information on this problem? Is there a way to cancel the update and go back to Mojave?

Not unless you made a clone backup, or Time Machine backup, and want to go through the steps provided here:

The best solution is to hard wire the Mac to the modem. You may need a 100 or 150 foot ethernet cord.
Some iMacs with no ethernet port, will need a thunderbolt-2 to ethernet adapter, or USB-C to ethernet adapter.
Yes, it can take real long if the storage on your computer is dying. It is much better to put on a full SSD in place of the Fusion drive. An Apple Authorized Service Center can help you do that.
That appeared to work. I installed the ethernet cable last night and a few minutes ago, my computer restarted! I thought all was good but now it appears it is stuck on the loading screen with the bar about half way across. I assume I should just wait and let it work out its issues? Can this take a long time too and I should just wait it out?
