How do I FaceTime internationally without incurring charges on Verizon?

Hi, I have a friend that lives in Jamaica WI, I want to be able to FaceTime her without being charged on my Verizon invoice. Can you please tell me what my iPhone settings should be? Cell Data totally turned off? Or just Roaming off? Thanks in advance.

Facetime uses data. Whether it's cellular data or WiFi makes no difference.

There are not charges from your carrier for using FaceTime unless you have a limited data plan and exceed your monthly allowance because of it, or you happen to be roaming outside of your coverage area and are charged for all of your roaming cellular data usage by your carrier.

It's not like making an international phone call on your cell plan.

Neither.

As long as you are connected to Wi-Fi, the rest is irrelevant. FaceTime uses any available internet connection. It does not use your Verizon minutes at all, and will only use cellular data if you are not connected to Wi-Fi.

If you turn off Cell Data and are not connected to Wi-fi then no FaceTime calls can be made.

If you are connected to Wi-Fi then Cell Data is not used so it does not matter whether its on or not.

Roaming is irrelevant unless you are out of the country. It does not apply when you are in your coverage area.

Just make sure you are connected to a Wi-Fi network and Verizon will be entirely un-involved.

Thank you. I got a charge on my bill from Verizon. Like $40 for 20 when I was FaceTiming …. I never shut my WiFi off, but maybe by accident I did. 🤷‍♀️…..

Did it say it was specifically for FaceTime. Unless Verizon is not actually giving you unlimited data and you went past whatever limit they had, there's no way for them to charge for FaceTime specifically. To them it's just internet traffic. And if you were own Wi-Fi even less chance of that happening.

Your best bet is to actually identify what the charge was for specifically. I doubt it was for FaceTime.
