Unable to access Mac mini recovery mode for password reset

HI my less than a month old MacMini won’t accept the log in password, I have tried everything, so followed the instructions to reset the password. I accessed the reset screen put the password for my apple account which I know is correct as it works on my iPad, but all that happens is the spinning wheel of doom goes around and around and nothing else happens.

this is not long after I updated the Mac to the latest version, is this why? Help
