Password won't work on new MacMini.

My MacMini has been working fine for the first two weeks since it arrived. Last week it refused the password. I tried resetting my Apple password but then I found out it was independent. No variation of the password works. Last night it locked me out. This morning, it does nothing---no lockout, no reset password option. All I have is the bottom three buttons--sign out, restart, sleep. I don't get any prompt to reset. Actually, I don't get any response at all. There were two options I found online to restore, using different prompts according to the type of chip you have. One worked last night to restart the computer, but it did nothing to fix the problem. I suppose I could fix it if I just got a "change password"prompt.

remember first of all that you Apple ID password and the computer password are not necessarily the same.


Go to the second article and follow the steps in

Use the Reset Password assistant


Basically, shut down, hold the power button until the "options" icon appears (it's quite big.)

Then in the upper left choose utilities -> terminal -> enter "resetpassword" as one word.

A screen for deactivating and reactivating your computer will appear. Follow the prompts.


Some will ask for you Apple ID password. Mine just deactivated and asked me for my new computer password.
