Docs remain attached to Apple Pages and Numbers after app closure on iMac

I do not know what is going on but after I did the latest upgrade I am suddenly getting docs attached to Number and Pages. i.e. I close out of either one of them and IF I just close without closing the doc(s) it/they stay attached and will pop up when activating the app the next time.

This is a LONG TIME HABIT with me where I just close the app when I am finished but up until recently it automatically closed the doc along with closing the app.

I can only say this for Pages and Nuimbers as they are the only Apple apps I use.
