Issue accessing alternate letters on iPad keyboard

I had to reset an old iPad and I’m getting the message

To access the alternate letters on the keyboard,pull down on the key and release. I can’t seems to get it to work. Am I holding the keys wrong or typing the wrong thing ? I have no keyboard. Thank you seems nothing on the web about this.
