A1314 Wireless Keyboard draining batteries

My A1314 wireless keyboard is draining batteries at an alarming rate. in 8 hours it has lost 5%. I am using the keyboard with a Mac Mini M4.

Keyboard: A1314. Firmware 0.5.0

Trackpad: A1339. Firmware 1.6.0

Mac Mini M4 with Sequoia 15.1

I have tried to update the firmware of the A1314 using this link Apple Wireless Keyboard (2009) Manuals and Downloads - Apple Support

however the PKG file does not detect my 2009 Apple wireless keyboard despite it being connected via bluetooth.

This seems an issue that is happening to alot of other people and was wondering if there is a fix?

Thanks in advance.

Mac mini, macOS 15.1

Chances are a keyboard, that came out in 2009, will have already spent its useful life. It also only has full functional support up to macOS Mojave as it only has Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity. You should consider retiring this keyboard. AFAIK, this keyboard would be considered obsolete by Apple Support so I don't think you will see any firmware updates. Even if there are, they could not upgrade the Bluetooth version.

Not sure what "alot of other people" still use this outdated keyboard, especially with modern Macs, like your M4 mini.
