Unable to start MacBook Pro 2014
TL;DR: Black screen, chime, charging works, creaky noise at attempted start up, won’t turn on, tried everything.
My MacBook is seemingly braindead, or whatever the mechanical equivalent would be. All I can do is elicit nerve reflexes and lend an ear to the intermittent death rattles.
The screen either doesn’t turn on, or a black screen appears, usually with a faint creaking noise from within the cadaver. Sometimes there’s a chime; Sometimes there isn’t. Keyboard lights aren’t turning on when the screen does, but the green caps lock light works when the black screen is lit up.
Another thing I can do when the dark glow graces me with its ever fleeting presence is activate Voice Over with the F12 button. Clicking ‘Enter’ then results in a booming exclamation. “Username,” the lifeless metal brick declares loftily.
Anyways, because of how old this thing is, I’m assuming mechanical issues are the culprit, not software. I’ve tried everything there is to try from the apple support pages. Resetting SMC, NVRAM, starting in safe mode, doing everything with the charger in, out, etc.
Now, I’m aware, beloved reader, that at this point you are most certainly stomping your feet, begging for a Genius Bar excursion featuring yours truly, but this isn’t my first rodeo.
This is the third time this has happened. Both other occurrences were remedied mysteriously, but successfully. If it’s been done twice before, surely together we can figure it out a third time, right?
With the first two events, after clicking all the buttons many, many times, the MacBook eventually rose back from the dead. (During first one, though, the fan went really crazy for a while, and I thought the thing wanted to blast off and live happily ever after as a satellite. Nonetheless, it did start working again, I just don’t know why.)
But this time is different, I’m at my wits end, and I really need your help. Thanks. Super surprised you read all that, though.
