Caller ID not showing since iOS 18.2.1

My phone rings and unless I recognize the phone number I can't tell who is calling because Caller ID doesn't show and the custom ring tone doesn't sound, just my default ring is heard. The settings have not been changed.

This does not happen all the time, but like every other day, it is an intermittent problem. It seems to be happening when my T-Mobile wifi is on LTE and not 5G. It does not happen often enough to say it is always, but enough to make the iPhone SE less useful. It never happened before this most recent update and I can't seem to find any setting that corrects it. I don't know whether I should be asking here or at T-Mobile. I live in a hilly remote rural area and never see more than 2 bars for wi-fi, in case that matters.

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

Thank you again, Jeff. The caller ID thing is working on my husband's iPhone on the same account (different number) as mine so it does not appear to be related to the carrier. His phone rang about 7 PM last night and the caller's name was announced as he has his set to do. Mine is just set to show the caller's ID from my contacts or none if it is an unknown caller. So when all calls have 'unknown' status, I may not answer. I stay busy.

I will have more time to dig through settings in about a week, but right now, I'm out of free time for that headache, it's why I thought to ask here.

I update the iPhone when there is an update. It may take months to figure out the how and why it stopped working. I get maybe one call a day, not a heavy user. I have reviewed my settings (AFAIK) and was hoping someone knew what settings might cause the problem. I guess I asked in the wrong place. I'll go see what T-Mobile suggests.

Thank you for your time, SravanKrA.

There are some settings to check, but Caller ID is provided by your carrier as a service. Callers can disable Caller ID if their device and carrier support that service. For example my iPhone 16 PM allows me to turn off caller ID.

There is a new feature on iOS 18.x.x, Silence Unknown Callers that might be affecting you as well. Please follow this path,

iPhone > Settings > Apps > Phone > scroll down > Silence Unknown Callers

The two recent calls where I noticed the problem definitely did not change their Caller ID settings. One is my husband (with the custom ring tone that isn't working) the other is my sister. I've talked to her, and my husband's phone is on my account so I could see if it had been changed. He also was happy to show me via his settings that he hadn't changed it. I don't expect to see Caller ID on unknown callers. It does make a difference on how much effort I'll make to answer a call when I can't tell who's calling.

I do appreciate the time you've taken to help, Jeff Donald but the intermittent failures really seem to be related to the poor reception in this area. If I take my phone outdoors and go to the east side of the house, I see 5 bars of reception. Here in my office I have 1, maybe two and it is frequently not the wonderful (?) 5G. Thing is, I had that situation before the iOS update and never had an issue with Caller ID or custom ringtone. When you live in the "last mile" of service, cellular Wi-Fi isn't that great. I'm used to it.

Sorry I couldn’t assist more. i suspect it may be cellular carrier related. Carriers generally supply Modem updates with each iOS update. The next update may contain a solution, or it could be your last mile situation.

Cellular carrier essentially transmit the calling phone number to the receiving phone's carrier, which then looks up the associated name (if available) in a database called CNAM (Caller Name Delivery) to display both the number and name on the recipient's iPhone. i suspect something may be happening because of the poor reception.
