How can I view suggested changes in Apple Proofreading

Proofreading rewrites my work without giving me a before-and-after view. I’m a writer and don’t want my work replaced. I want it checked.

That’s what I thought as well, but it has not been my experience. Hopefully someone from apple can shed a little light.

No one from Apple will comment here. This is a user to user only forum. I'd suggest you contact Apple directly if you want to get guidance from them. If you're in the US, you can call them at: 800-MY-APPLE or visit your closest Apple Store Genius Bar.

I have the same issue on my Mac and find the proofreading useless in Pages as it doesn't allow me to view clearly the changes being made, especially since it is far from flawless (e.g. adding punctuation at the end of some lines of a list but not all of them).

I have found a workaround, however, even if it is not perfect. The proofreading works the way I like in Mail. So I copy and paste the content I need to check in an empty email and work from there. For some reason, in this app, the proofreader shows individual changes and offers the option to accept or reject them. It's a bit of a useless waste of time, but at least it helps avoid the need for Grammarly, which has worsened drastically recently (at least the free version) in my view.

I hope that helps.
