Watching ads for rewards, always opens up the app store. unfortunately this is an app that requires wifi, so putting on airplane mode will not work

If the ad in the game is coded that way, as many are, there's nothing you can do to stop it other than just not using that app. You can complain to the app developer, but it's unlikely to change anything since that's how they make their money.

That is their business model and you have the choice to support it or not. Ads coded to open up the App Store puts more money in their pockets. It is not difficult to do as it is just a URL link, like you can find on a website that is used to open the App Store to that particular game they are advertising.
