Text message defaults to old number

I am trying to send messages to a someone that updated their phone number. I deleted the old number out of the contact list. But when I try to send a message to the new number iMessage somehow defaults to the old number. It is strange because in my message folder the number number shows the message. Then a few seconds later I see the same message in my message folder going to both numbers. And then a bit later the new number is gone and it only shows the old number. That old number does have a text history, but it is no longer in my contact list! I don’t want to delete the text history; is there anything else I can try?

SAME exact situation, still looking for an answer. I completely delete the contact and added them back as new, sent a text, and it shows in my Message List not with their name but with the OLD PHONE NUMBER. ARRGH.

Apple has always been historically bad with synchronization, just try and run iTunes for Windows and in time it becomes an unmitigated MESS with dupes everywhere... and this has been the case for 20 years on multiple PCs. Just looking at my account info on my iPhone shows associated devices, and it has my desktop PC and my laptop listed FIVE TIMES each. So it's no wonder Apple code can't manage a phone number change. I even wiped my phone , restored from iCloud backup and the issue is still there.

I'll reply if I figure it out.
