I don't want to remove my phone number.
What I want to do is not have a certain contact show up on my mac when using imessage.
However, I do not want to delete that contact, because then it will be deleted from my iphone. I only want that contact to not show past--or future--messages on my macbook.

yeah, that’s kinda my point. I don’t want to block number I just don’t want that number to be shown on my Mac. I use it’s much easier for someone to see some of my messages over my shoulder on my Mac than my phone. There’s a huge difference there.
I believe you want to block a particular number from appearing in the Messages app. If that is correct, read Block messages in Messages on Mac - Apple Support.
Note that if you block a contact, it will be blocked on all of the devices that share the same Apple ID.
You can disable messages in iCloud, which will prevent them from syncing on your Mac, but it's an all or nothing selection.

Yeah makes sense. Might as well just write myself notes using invisible ink. Why bother using a computer again?
