Issue with Samsung G9 57-Inch Monitor and Mac Mini M4 Wake from Sleep

I’m encountering an intermittent issue with my Samsung G9 57-inch monitor when paired with my Mac Mini M4 using an HDMI 2.1 cable.

When my Mac Mini goes to sleep for an extended period (usually 3-4 hours or more) and I wake it up, the screen occasionally appears stretched. This doesn’t happen every time but seems to occur more frequently after a longer sleep duration. Other than this, the HDMI 2.1 cable works perfectly fine in all other scenarios.

Here are some details about my setup:

• Monitor: Samsung G9 57-inch (latest firmware)

• Computer: Mac Mini M4 Pro

• Connection: HDMI 2.1

Has anyone else experienced this issue or found a fix? Could it be related to macOS settings, monitor settings, or possibly a handshake issue with HDMI after long sleep periods? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Computer Sleep is and has been a problem for sometime now.

As a test:

Turn On "Prevent automatic sleeping when display is off"

Set "Turn display off when inactive" to 5 or 10 minutes

Leave the Mac On with the display Off, then shutdown for longer periods of non-use.

I reset my Mac mini and it looked like it was still checked. I unchecked it then restarted again and then it stayed unchecked. We will find out what happens tomorrow morning when I log on if it's stretched.

I usually just lock my screen manually, seems to make this issue a little better. I have a direct connect to the MBP via HDMI with the cable that was provided by the monitor. It still wakes up randomly, but has been a lot less for some reason.

I believe that manually Sleeps the computer which is unnecessary on later computers and can cause various issues including the one you’re experiencing.

I would do two things:

Set the display to turn off on timer
Use Control-Command-Q to immediately lock your screen (instead of waiting for the display to switch off on timer).

I'm still having the issue. I want to note this isn't changing the resolution in the settings it just wakes up and everything is stretched. I will attach photo next time it happens. It seems to always happen after leaving the mac for more than 4 hours.

In addition to testing the settings that suggested above and not sleeping the Mac mini. Try replacing the HDMI cable with a short (3.3 ft) certified high speed 8K HDMI cable.

Let me know what you discover... I have a MBP M4 Max and the monitor is constantly turning on/off and I experience that same stretching issue. Unplugging the HDMI and plugging back in usually works for me, but what a pain. Apple and Samsung are NOT playing nice.

Let me get very specific. At 4PM when I'm done working I push the Touch ID button on the keyboard and I then at 8AM the next day I come back and I wiggle the mouse and when I do that it the login screen comes back up and everything has been stretched. The resolution is still 7680 x 2160 but it's like it has been stretched horizontally as it is forcing itself to a non-native resolution. Once I restart my Mac, it fixes it.

Also side note, I just switched to USB-C to Display port and when I came in at 8AM this morning it was not stretched however it switched resolution to "3840 x 1080 (Default)" which is way better because then I only have to change the resolution instead of restarting. I also noticed that this time... which I will check a 2nd time today that the monitor actually was turned off.

I'm not certain if locking my computer at 4PM is apart of the problem, but I suppose the only alternative is not to lock it when I'm done at the end of the day. Curious to see if anyone has any suggestions with the new information provided.

Great! Re: MBP via HDMI - you needs to disable Sleep on the MBP too - you know what to do. Additionally for MacBooks, be sure to check and set the hard disks to "Never Sleep" (find under Battery). All the best.

Okay, so switching to USBc to display has fixed my screen stretching issue. Now my current issue is my screen turns completely off after my Mac has been locked for more than 2-3 hours and doesn’t auto awake like it used to do with HDMI so now I have to pick the lesser of 2 evils I suppose.
